Photographic Process
Limitless Africans is documentary photography series about LGBTQ African immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. For this series, Owunna traveled to 10 countries over six years in order to photograph and interview 50 LGBTQ Africans. In these images, Owunna uses specific posing, clothing, and adornment to explore the West African Dagara idea that queer people, because they can vibrate masculine and feminine energy, preserve a special connection to the androgynous creator and as such are tasked with maintaining the gates, the high vibrational points connecting the physical to the spiritual world. This project was featured in publications including The New York Times, CNN, NPR, and The Guardian, and Limitless Africans has been exhibited and acquired into public collections in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Canada, and across the United States by institutions including Tate Modern, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Nasher Museum of Art.
